Jacobus Arminius

   Jacobus Arminius was a man where we get the term; Arminianism, backslide from.  Many people today never heard of the word Arminianism, let alone where or who it came from.

   Mostly everyone has heard people use the word backslide in our time, but only a few know about the origin. Verses used on this page are those used in Arminian theology.

Losing Salvation, Arminian, Backslide

   Moving ahead from Jacobus we see many Church leaders splitting over the theological debate Arminius had with Calvinists. Various groups today believe in backsliding or falling from grace because of this split; Pentecostal, Free Will Baptist, Methodist, COGC, Holiness,  Nazarenes, Churches of Christ, John Wesley, Billy Graham ETC.

   Each group and follower have different views about how a believer can lose their salvation, and they have their select verses.  Let us look at some of these verses,  some that Calvinism avoids.

James 2:14-26King James Version (KJV)

    "What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?"

Acts 1:25
That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.

Romans 11:20-22

20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:

21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.

22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

1 Corinthians 9:27

  No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

2 Peter 3:17 NIV
  Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position.

2 Peter 2:20-21

20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.

21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.

1 Timothy 4:1

4 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

John 8:31-32

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

Matthew 7:19-23

Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

In Context

Colossians 1:21-23

21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled

22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

   Hebrews 6:4-6 (KJV)

4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,

5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,

6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

   This theology appears to hold the position well, plenty of verses, contextual support, dispensational barrier breakthroughs.  No matter what position you hold in this argument, both sides have plenty of verses for their defense.  Critically analyzing the Calvinistic/Arminian argument, it is very clear the theological debate is up for an individuals opinion only.
